Gary Barlow takes on The X Factor with new show

The X Factor will face a new challenge from a rival reality pop show devised by Gary Barlow.

The 37-year-old singer has said that he wants to take on Simon Cowell's hit show in the new programme for the BBC, according to a report in the Sun.

The Take That star has devised the new format for the reality show which will attempt to create a new boyband.

Garry has developed the show with the support of Universal, who are the backers of his own newly-established record label, and fierce rivals of Cowell's label Sony BMG.

It is believed that Gary first offered the idea to ITV while working for them on the show Britannia High but bosses declined over fears of upsetting Simon Cowell.

Gary then took the format to the BBC who are keen to produce the new show later this year.

An insider at the BBC said: "Gary is really keen to get into TV and has come up with a cracking idea. We've got high hopes for it.

"If it gets off the ground it could be something we do every year."
